Electronic Snap Circuits SC-300 Review

If you’re looking to give your child an exciting and hands-on toy that will introduce them to the world of electronics, then look to Snap Circuits SC-300 by Elenco Electronics. This toy has been rated as one of Dr. Toy’s 100 Best Children’s Products and it is also in the Dr. Toy Best Educational Products category. The National Parenting Center has also given this toy its Seal of Approval. If you want your children to play with something fun and interesting that also has the potential to teach them something, then look to Snap Circuits SC-300 to provide it at a price that’s easy to afford.

This toy contains over 60 Snap-Together parts, two manuals, a plastic snap grid, and 32 electronic parts. It has the potential to build over 300 exciting projects. One thing you’ll need but is not included in the set is four AA batteries. It is recommended for children 8 and older, giving them an entertaining yet solid base understanding of how electronics work.

A brief but easily discernable manual is included, and is illustrated for your convenience. The manual is also available online. Some of the neat projects that you and your children can create with the Snap Circuits SC-300 include a radio, doorbell, burglar alarm and much, much, more.

Some parts to look for in your kit include snap wires, slide switch, resistor, microphone and capacitors – all color coded and numbered for easy identification. Combine these components to create working circuit boards, just like the ones inside your TV, radio and other electronic devices. They all snap onto the plastic grid, with no soldering required. There is simply no better way to help your children answer those pressing questions like “How does the TV work?” or “How do the lights turn on and off?”  This toy gives them a good understanding of the world around them, and how it operates.

A project list is available that lists everything your child can create using the SC-100 set on up, including a photosensitive electronic organ, lie detector, AM radio, fire fan symphony, water-detection alarm, delayed-action fan and more. Different sets allow your children to understand different aspects of electricity, including switches, circuits, fuses, transformation of circuit sounds, etc. The projects start out easy and get progressively more difficult, as your child masters each new skill set.

Another great aspect of the Snap Circuits toy is the ability to design your own projects as well as upgrade your kit. Once your children seem to have mastered some techniques, they can use their newfound knowledge to create customized circuits and electronic devices. Snap Circuits Pro, Snap Circuits Extreme and SCM-400 are all upgrades that are available with the purchase of a UC-50, UC-70, or UC-100 kit. Let your child take their fun and learning to the next stage!

SC-300 User Reviews: Pros

Parents with a bit of an electronics background absolutely adore this toy for their children. It is a great way to introduce modern sciences to children, allowing their knowledge to blossom from the hands-on experience.

Parents do credit this toy with being entertaining as well as educational, and many have reported that their children were engrossed for hours at a time. The symbols stamped on each respective part allow the user to become familiar with the part, and the manual is easy to follow. The snap-on snap-off concept is easy to understand as well as execute.

Snap Circuits SC-300 User Reviews: Cons

While the manual is easy to read, there is nothing to teach the child what they are actually working with. The diagrams in the manual come with only a brief explanation and do not explain how the components actually interact within the circuit. Many children simply mimic the diagram without actually understanding the science behind it. Here are some other cons when it comes to the Snap Circuits SC-300 Set.

  • Some buyers of this toy have complained that certain components stopped working or never worked right out of the box. This means that even when you have assembled a project exactly like the diagram in the manual; it still won’t work, leaving you left to wonder if you did this wrong or if something is not working properly.
  • As assembly occurs, some of the tension from snapping on and snapping off causes previous components to come undone. You must frequently stop and check all of the connections to make sure they are sound.
  • Children over 12 may become bored with this particular set.

SC-300 Overview

While there is a smaller set and a larger set, the SC-300 is a good way to introduce a boy or girl to electronics to see if they are interested in it or have a knack for putting together contraptions – beyond the instruction book even maybe! If there is an interest, we recommend the Snap Circuits PRO SC-500  or even the Snap Circuits Extreme SC-750  set. They are more expensive, but they come with more parts and more experiments. There is also a Green Energy kit as well. The Elenco Snap Circuits Green – Alternative Energy Kit is a great way to introduce children to the environment and possibilities for alternative energy.

Snap Circuits is a great line of electronic toys available from Elenco Electronics. We (along with many others) really recommend them as a great educational toy that is also fun – for some children. Unless you know the child is interested in electronics, you may want to start with the SC-300 kit as it has just enough parts and experiments for them to have fun while learning at the same time.  Whether you get this electronics building kit that snaps together for a boy or girl or one for both, we think you and the children are going to be super pleased with the choice.

If you have any of the Snap Circuits kits, we would LOVE to hear your opinion. Leave a comment below and share with the staff and the world at large what you think about the SC-300, the SC-500 or even the SC-750 extreme set. Leaving a comment is free, easy, and we think you’ll have fun sharing your thoughts about one of the best electronic toys out there for children.
